Migrate Your WhatsApp Conversations

Moving WhatsApp Business from Tawk.to
Tawk.to added native WhatsApp integration in December 2025 as part of its End-of-Year update. WhatsApp numbers are connected through Meta's embedded signup flow via Administration → Integrations → Messaging → WhatsApp. Your phone number and WhatsApp Business Account belong to your Meta Business Manager — not tawk.to — so they transfer when you switch platforms.
Step 1: Review Your WhatsApp Setup in Tawk.to
Log into your tawk.to dashboard and select the property with WhatsApp connected. Navigate to Administration → Integrations → Messaging → WhatsApp and open Settings. Note which phone numbers are connected, which Meta Business Account they're associated with, and any WhatsApp templates you've synced. Tawk.to supports connecting multiple WhatsApp numbers per property — document all of them. Also check whether two-factor authentication is enabled on your WhatsApp Business Account in Meta Business Manager, as this may need to be temporarily disabled during the transfer.
Step 2: Save Your WhatsApp Templates
If you've been using WhatsApp template messages for follow-ups or re-engagement outside the 24-hour response window, note your approved templates. Templates are stored in Meta's system, not tawk.to's, so they remain available after switching. However, you'll need to reference the same template names when configuring your new platform.
Step 3: Disconnect from Tawk.to
In Meta's WhatsApp Manager at business.facebook.com/wa/manage, verify your Business Account ownership. Then remove the WhatsApp integration from your tawk.to property's Administration → Integrations settings. Tawk.to requires that WhatsApp numbers are not connected to other apps before they can be connected to tawk.to — the same restriction applies in reverse. Ensure the number is fully released before connecting to your new platform.
Step 4: Connect to Your New Platform
Use your new platform's WhatsApp OAuth flow to reconnect the same number. Your verified business status, display name, and profile carry over — they're stored in Meta's system. The connection typically takes 2–5 minutes once the number is released from tawk.to. After connecting, send a test message to confirm message routing works before switching your team over.
Key Limitation to Know
In tawk.to, each WhatsApp number can only be connected to one property. If you have multiple properties, each needs its own WhatsApp number. When migrating, make sure to disconnect numbers from each property individually before reconnecting them on your new platform.
Important: Plan the switchover during low-traffic hours. There's a brief gap (typically minutes, sometimes up to a few hours) between disconnecting from tawk.to and connecting to your new platform where incoming WhatsApp messages won't be routed to any inbox.
