Complete guide to migrating all your messaging channels (WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, etc.) from Whelp.

Migrating All Channels from Whelp

Whelp supports a broad set of channels: live chat widget, WhatsApp Business API (Standard+), Telegram (Standard+), Facebook Messenger (Standard+), Instagram Direct (Standard+), Instagram/Facebook comments (Advanced+), email (Standard+), SMS and voice via Twilio (Standard+), plus Viber, Line, and Webex. It does not support Discord or Zalo on any plan.

Live Chat Widget

Whelp's live chat widget is embedded on your website via a JavaScript snippet. To migrate: remove the Whelp widget code from your site's HTML — look for the script tag referencing widget.whelp.co or the Whelp widget loader. If you installed it through a CMS plugin (Shopify, WordPress, etc.), uninstall the Whelp app or plugin. Then install your new platform's chat widget using their embed code, CMS plugin, or GTM template. Widget appearance settings (color, welcome message, position) won't transfer — configure them fresh on your new platform.

Facebook Messenger and Instagram

Whelp connects Messenger and Instagram through Meta OAuth. Messenger (Standard+) and Instagram Direct (Standard+) use page-level permissions. Instagram comments and Facebook comments require the Advanced plan ($79/seat/mo). To migrate: disconnect these channels from Whelp's integration settings, then reconnect the same Facebook pages and Instagram accounts to your new platform via Meta OAuth. Your page followers, business verification, and account settings remain intact — they belong to your Meta Business account. Each reconnection takes 2-3 minutes.

Telegram

Whelp's Telegram integration (Standard+) uses a standard bot token created through Telegram's BotFather. To migrate: disconnect the bot from Whelp's settings, then enter the same bot token in your new platform's Telegram integration. Only one platform can use a bot token at a time, so disconnect from Whelp first. Alternatively, create a new bot through BotFather if you want a fresh start. Connection is instant — no approval or verification needed.

WhatsApp and Email

WhatsApp requires a BSP transfer through Meta Business Manager — see the dedicated WhatsApp migration guide. Email involves updating forwarding rules or SMTP settings — see the email migration guide. Both are higher-impact migrations that should be done during low-traffic hours.

SMS and Voice (Twilio)

Whelp integrates SMS and voice calls through Twilio (Standard+). Your Twilio account, phone numbers, and credentials are yours — they're independent of Whelp. To migrate: disconnect the Twilio integration from Whelp and configure the same Twilio credentials on your new platform if it supports Twilio. If your new platform doesn't use Twilio for SMS/voice, you'll need to evaluate alternatives or keep Twilio as a separate tool.

Channels Whelp Doesn't Support

Whelp has no native integration for Discord or Zalo on any plan. If your customers use these platforms, switching to a platform with native support opens new channels without workarounds. Discord connects via a bot token (2 minutes to set up), and Zalo via OAuth with PKCE flow — these are net-new channels you gain by switching, not channels you need to migrate. Whelp does support Viber, Line, and Webex, which your new platform may not — verify channel compatibility before committing.

Migration order: Start with your lowest-volume channel. Migrate the live chat widget and Telegram first (quick, low risk). Messenger and Instagram are straightforward OAuth reconnections. Save WhatsApp and email for last — they carry the most traffic and require DNS changes or BSP transfers that take time to propagate.
