Migrate Your Email Support
Part of the Chatwoot migration guide
How to migrate your email support workflows, templates, and history from Chatwoot without losing data.
Migrating Email Support from Chatwoot
Chatwoot supports email via two methods: email forwarding (quick setup, forward your support@ address to Chatwoot) and IMAP/SMTP connection (direct two-way sync with Gmail, Outlook, or any IMAP provider). The method you used determines your migration path.
If You Used Email Forwarding
Your email provider (Gmail, Outlook, etc.) is forwarding a copy of incoming mail to a Chatwoot address. To migrate, simply update the forwarding rule in your email provider's settings. Remove the Chatwoot forwarding destination and add your new platform's inbound email address instead. Replies you sent through Chatwoot came from Chatwoot's servers — your customers may have seen a Chatwoot reply-to address unless you configured a custom sender.
If You Used IMAP/SMTP
Chatwoot connected directly to your mail server. In Chatwoot, go to Settings › Inboxes and delete the email inbox to disconnect the IMAP/SMTP connection. Your emails remain in your original mailbox — Chatwoot reads from it but doesn't delete originals. You can then connect the same mailbox to your new platform.
Email Options in Converge
Converge supports email through two methods: Gmail integration (service account with domain-wide delegation) and custom domain email (Mailgun inbound routing). The Gmail method requires no DNS changes — configure a Google service account and grant domain-wide delegation. The Mailgun method requires updating MX records to route email through Mailgun.
Migrate Your Canned Responses
Chatwoot's canned responses (reusable text snippets triggered by typing a shortcode) are the equivalent of Converge's Quick Replies. Export them via the API at /api/v1/accounts/{id}/canned_responses and recreate them in Converge. Quick Replies in Converge also support variables (customer name, company, etc.) and file attachments.
Email Signatures and Formatting
If you configured per-inbox email signatures in Chatwoot, copy them before deleting your inbox. Chatwoot supports rich text formatting and CC/BCC — features that work differently depending on which email method you choose in your new platform.
Multiple Email Inboxes
If you connected multiple email addresses in Chatwoot (support@, sales@, billing@), each was set up as a separate inbox with its own team assignment. Document which email address maps to which team before migrating. In Converge, you can connect multiple email addresses through separate Gmail service accounts or Mailgun domains to maintain the same departmental separation.
Auto-Responder Configuration
If you set up auto-responders in Chatwoot (available on Startups plan and above) for email inboxes, recreate equivalent responses in your new platform. Converge's auto-reply system supports A/B testing, working hours modes, and per-channel control — giving you more flexibility than Chatwoot's basic auto-responder.
