How to Set Up Gmail Integration

Converge Converge Team

Guide to connecting Gmail to Converge using a Google service account with domain-wide delegation for email support.

1

Set up domain-wide delegation in Google Workspace

Gmail integration uses a service account with domain-wide delegation. Converge provides a shared service account — you just need to authorize it in your Google Workspace Admin Console.

What is domain-wide delegation? It allows Converge's service account to read and send emails on behalf of users in your Google Workspace domain. This is the standard way enterprise apps integrate with Gmail.

Requirements:

  • A Google Workspace account (not personal Gmail)
  • Super admin access to your Google Workspace Admin Console

Note: Personal Gmail accounts (ending in @gmail.com) are not supported. Gmail integration requires Google Workspace (business email).

2

Get Converge's service account Client ID

In Converge, go to Settings → Platforms → Gmail (only Owners and Admins can access this). You'll see Converge's Service Account Client ID displayed on the page.

Copy the Client ID: You'll need this to authorize Converge in your Google Workspace Admin Console.

Why a shared service account: Instead of creating your own service account and managing JSON key files, Converge provides a ready-to-use service account. You just need to authorize it to access your domain's Gmail.

3

Authorize in Google Workspace Admin Console

Go to your Google Workspace Admin Console. Navigate to Security → API Controls → Domain-wide Delegation. Click Add New.

Add the delegation:

  • Client ID: Paste the Client ID from Converge's Gmail settings page
  • OAuth scopes: Add these scopes: https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.readonly and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.send

Click Authorize. This grants Converge's service account permission to read and send emails on behalf of users in your domain.

What these scopes mean: The gmail.readonly scope allows reading incoming emails, and gmail.send allows sending replies. Converge needs both to provide full email support functionality.

Important: You must be a Google Workspace super admin to configure domain-wide delegation. If you're not an admin, ask your IT team to set this up.

4

Connect in Converge

Back in Converge's Gmail settings, enter the email address and domain you want to monitor.

Email address: Enter the Gmail address you want Converge to read emails from. For example, [email protected]. This is the inbox that Converge will monitor.

Domain: Enter your Google Workspace domain (e.g., yourcompany.com).

Click Connect. Converge will verify access to the Gmail mailbox using the service account. If domain-wide delegation is correctly configured, the status will update to "Connected" and you'll start seeing emails in your inbox.

Common issues:

  • "Access denied" error: Make sure domain-wide delegation is properly configured with the correct Client ID and both scopes.
  • "Email already connected" error: This email address is already connected to another Converge workspace.
  • Messages not syncing: Gmail polling happens every few minutes. New emails should appear within 5-10 minutes of arriving in your Gmail inbox.

Success indicator: When an email is sent to your support@ email address and it appears in Converge — and when you reply from Converge and the customer receives your email response — your Gmail integration is fully working.
